[edit] Powers
Mimicry of others. Cal’s mutation exists on several levels, which are constantly growing and expanding as he ages. He is, essentially, currently able to make copies of those who are within a twenty foot radius (which will reach the distance of a full city block within two years). This capability is always on, even while he's asleep or unconscious, and covers everything sentient within it, barring animals (but of course allowing for humans, aliens, other races, etc etc hate-filled confusion). His mutation latches onto the strengths, talents/skills, physical capabilities, knowledge, superhuman abilities, and so forth of those that distance or less from him. Cal is then able to make copies of these things and store them in himself, with slots for five copies at a time within him.
Everything but superhuman powers are copied at their full level in him, with powers being copied and stored at half-power. he does not copy weaknesses of others (for example, in copying a person stronger than him he would gain their added strength, but in copying a person weaker than him would not himself become weaker), or added on elements or complications to mutations (ex: would not gain metal over his bone structure with wolverine (if this were a Logan who had the metal), would not copy Scott’s injury-caused disability with his power's functionality, etc). In cases where a mutation cannot be copied at half-power (physical mutations, certain non-physical mutations such as mystique's morphing, etc), he copies them in full.
At present, Cal has very little control over who he copies, when, or for how long. His mind currently chooses randomly (and without his knowing) which five persons he has copied, and doesn't allow slots to go unfilled. With focus and practice he will be able to choose who he wants to copy, or be able to leave slots open if he wants. he is only able to hold on to a copy for a limited time once the source has left his area; presently he can keep a copy for up to two hours after they've left him, provided he's been around them for a full minute prior to their moving out of his range. if they're there for less then he'll be able to hold onto their copy for less. This time span will increase as his powers develop, to the point where if he's around someone for a total of two hours (doesn't have to be all at once), then he can hold on to their copy until he wants to let go of it.
He copies powers at their current level (rather than what they'll be capable of in the future), with control capabilities matching what the owner has. He can't read or copy latent powers. Taking a copy of a person doesn't affect them in any way, and is generally unnoticeable. if his powers are shut off or stopped he will retain his previous copies when they return, and they don't appear as powers of his when he's read by another copier (regardless of his holds, his core power is the one that shows). His powers will eventually grow to the point where he will begin siphoning the life-forces of others without touching them, and also contain the potential to hold a store of copies that he can insert into his own, rather than needing to be around the person again to gain them. If supercharged, his powers grow to allow for ten spots at half-power, or five at full power.

[edit] Personality
Arrogant. Abrasive. In your face. Cal’s a textbook example of someone made overly defensive by past events, who as a result now attacks first instead of waiting to be attacked. He knows that how he is pisses others off, and so he just shoves it in their faces more. He's overconfident and approaches situations with an air of being better than the others around him. He doesn't try to make friends much anymore, although he used to be a good one. If the world's going to suck, then he's just going to be better than the entire world and rub it in. defensive. Will get in the faces of anyone he thinks is attacking him in some way. Has a vague respect for authority figures, but that can be easy to lose. Doesn’t tend to attack those that he perceives to be weaker or lesser than himself, going instead for those on or above his level. He even occasionally do nice or altruistic things, but dislikes it being known that he's the one behind the gesture. Does things for attention, regardless of if it's positive or negative feedback that he's getting. Thrives on flattery and praise. Actually does want approval, although he won't admit it. Immortality complex. Thrill-seeker. Wants the best of everything. Has high standards for himself and others. Considers himself far more grown up and mature than he is. Definite leader rather than follower. Stubborn. Difficult to argue into anything, needs to reach the conclusion on his own before he'll accept it. Will go his own way even if others aren't coming with him.
[edit] History
Calvin Montgomery Rankin was the only child born to Dr. Ronald Rankin and his wife, Elizabeth. The pregnancy was a difficult one, and she died just after giving birth to him, due to massive haemorrhaging. Dr. Rankin never quite recovered from her death, and while he had dates every now and then he never got serious with another woman. Cal didn't mind this, of course. Even from a young age, he liked his space as it had already been established. He didn't want someone else coming in to disturb him, or to distract his father even further from him. It wasn't that Dr. Rankin held the death against cal, or avoided him. He just didn't know how to be a father, and without his wife there to tether him to the ground, he tended to lose himself extensively in his work as a genetic scientist.
So cal found other things to do. Partially due to nature and partially due to nurture, he had an independent streak a mile long, often staying out and doing whatever he liked. He didn't run completely wild; he made average grades in school, and while he was known for acting out in class he managed to avoid serious punishments like suspensions. He had friends (and a few friends parents who thought he was too cheeky), a few girlfriends over the years, and was more or less fine with his life. When he was sixteen though, things started to change.
He hadn't meant to screw things up in his father's lab. He’d wandered down to the lab that Dr. Rankin had built under their New Jersey home, bored and looking to poke around since his father wasn't at home. Cal didn't have a serious interest in what it was Dr. Rankin did; just knowing that he was some kind of scientist that did something for the government. When cal had been told that no, it did not involve aliens, he'd tuned out. But still, he partially wanted to know what it was that was so interesting about it all. Therefore, he'd gone down to poke around. And ended up knocking over an entire set of filled beakers on accident, releasing some kind of weird gas into the air. He panicked and ran back out, disappearing until much later that night. His father gave him a rather long look when he came home, but didn't mention it.
After that, things started to change.
It was hard to pin down at first, and he couldn't explain it exactly. It was like this awareness of the people around him. He passed it off as just being able to read people well, and having a good feel for knowing where others were; it was so unobtrusive and natural-feeling that there wasn't an adjustment period for him with it. He started to do much better in school as well, finding that he suddenly just knew the answers to his tests and the homework that he could typically get done in class. The teachers were impressed with his obvious studying, after first testing him a few times to make sure that he wasn't cheating (as they'd originally thought him to be). In PE he ended up accidentally copying one of the football players and began running faster and hitting harder. The coach stuck him in tryouts and he ended up on some of the school teams. His popularity skyrocketed, and everything seemed perfect for awhile.
But then people started to turn. He was too good at everything. People started whispering about him, disliking him being at the top of every ladder there was. He was cheating, he was on drugs, he was a robot. Cal started to get into fights at school, and even the teachers started to doubt him again, making him undergo more testing before Dr. Rankin made them stop. When it got to the point of vandalism on the Rankins property, cal's father applied for a transfer and took his son to the opposite coast.
