[edit] Powers

  • Super speed:  Jean-Paul is about to channel the kinetic energy of his body in a single direction and use this energy to propel his body. He has the ability to move his entire body, such as running or swimming, or move certain parts such as his arm. Right now, he mainly uses his ability to zip around his room, enhance his reflexes and at one point, he used it in his swimming. Considering he grew up in suburban/urban areas, he really hasn't had much chance to see exactly how fast he can run. Jean-Paul has the potential to reach Mach 10 speeds, but that won't be happening anytime soon.

  • Flight:  In addition to his super speed, he is also the ability of flight and can do so at the same super speed. However, he really has no idea how fast he can go considering his extent of flight is flying around the halls of the hotel. Sometimes he likes to float around his room just for fun.

  • Physical enhancement:  To compensate for his speed, Jean-Paul's body has become extremely resilient to damage against his skin and temperature extremes. His bones are also ridiculously resilient. Basically, his body can withstand his Mach 10 potential. He doesn't realize he has this, but he never complains that he is cold? Blah, blah, blah he has a really high metabolism, which means he heals faster than most and has to drink a lot of liquor to get drunk. Jean-Paul can also eat a Big Mac and never get fat. He also has good balance and shit.

  • Light generation:  Upon physical contact  with his sister, the twins are able to produce blinding blasts of light.  Currently, this only occurs with Aurora and only when their hands touch.

  • Pointed ears:  Pretty self-explanatory.  Doctors have always considered this a minor birth defect.

[edit] Appearance

Height:  5'11", though he always rounds it up to six foot.

Hair:  Dark brown with some premature graying.

Eye color:  Blue. He secretly considers them his best feature.

Build:  Athletic, yet slightly too skinny.

Distinguishing features:  Pointed ears.  Really pale.  Perpetual scowl.

Style:  Dresses almost solely in clothing from American Eagle given his former awesome discount. For work, he splurges on clothes from Express.

[edit] Personality

Shy and quiet is a first impression often associated with Jean-Paul. While he has been at the hotel almost a year, he still rarely seeks out constant social interaction with the other residents. Sure, he will mutter hello if he passes them in the hallway and when the hotel has some sort of event (i.e. a holiday dinner), he will show up for a little bit, but that is where his random social interaction stops. He attests that he is more happy hanging out in his room watching television/listening to his iPod/putzing around the Internet/reading a book than hanging around most people and doesn't need other people to have fun.

It's not to say he completely holes himself up in his room and avoids people all together. For him, there are a few select people that he will actually seek out and regularly spend time with, though Jean-Paul seems to be able to count them on one hand. With these people, he actually does normal teenage things like play video games, go to the movies, eat inexpensive food from trashy restaurants, etc. These people have actually heard him talk beyond two sentences and maybe, just maybe, have heard him laugh and actually seen him smile. He cares about these people very much, but has no idea how to express that and at times, how to deal with it either.

Despite these people, it's probably safe to say that he often comes off in a bit of a bad light to people who don't know him and, hell, sometimes to the people who do. His sense of humor is dry, which makes him sound like an asshole half the time. He has a habit of appearing stand-offish and arrogant, which is usually a direct result of his general attitude on the journals and stuff. His comments can sometimes be taken as hurtful and given the day, Jean-Paul might very well mean for them to do just that. On very rare occasions, he has enjoyed the misery of others, like Jared who totally deserved it. He doesn't go out of his way to be friendly and will maintain that he doesn't care what people think of him as a result.

However, this really isn't the truth with him. Jean-Paul actually does want friends and he does want people to like him to a certain degree. Truth be told, he would even like something along the lines of a boyfriend some day, but he doesn't know how to go about achieving these things. He cares about certain people a lot, perhaps even more than they care about him. Spending nearly ten years in the foster care system, especially since it began at such a young age, has really taken its toll on the young man. He spent so much time building up walls and developing defense mechanisms to keep people out because he was always being shuffled from place to place. It was much easier to keep people at arm's length rather than get attached, only to leave a few months later. He's been doing this so long that he doesn't even realize he does it any longer. Whenever he feels threatened, nervous or scared by a situation, or sometimes even without a prompt, Jean-Paul just reverts to those techniques without so much as a thought. He even does it to those he considers friends, which makes him feel incredibly bad once he realizes that he's done it. He is working on avoiding these tactics with the few he considers friends, but it's an uphill battle to change years of learned behavior and sometimes it is much easier said than done.

Jean-Paul also has the very bad habit of bottling up his emotions. If something is bothering him, it is very rare that he will actually talk about it, instead choosing to ignore said emotions and act as if nothing is wrong. He could really be hurting inside over something, but he will always claim that he is “fine” and that everything is all right. Another trick he loves is to pull the old “Do what every you want” or “I am going to go now” instead of dealing with the problem at hand. Most of his emotions get buried thanks to years of practice and now, he doesn't know how to properly deal with them, thus once again reverting to his old ways. He thinks at least doing that will keep him from becoming hurt or upset, but it more than likely makes the situations even worse.

He can also be very bitter at some points, especially regarding his swimming career. Oh hell. He's still a bit bitter that two sets of parents died on him and he was shuffled around through foster care. Yes, he realizes that it could have been way worse and some people, like his sister, where handed a worse deal that him. Sadly, that doesn't stop him from sometimes wallowing in self-pity and angst. Thankfully for everyone, he isn't in the habit of verbalizing all this and instead, chooses to simply withdraw from things until he feels a bit better.

While he hasn't know his sister very long, he has already attached himself to her very hard. Part of it is because he sees her as a person who will love and accept him no matter what, but also because he feels partially responsible for her current condition. If the Martin's hadn't chose him, his sister wouldn't have ended up so fucked-up in his mind. He was the lucky one, so the least he can do is look out for her and take care of her. Jean-Paul is more protective over Jeanne-Marie than Aurora, but in the end he loves them both equally. He has also taken to fixing up any trouble either one might get herself into and will jump to defend her. As messed up as it sounds, he really doesn't want his sister to get better as he has grown attached to both of her personalities and ultimately he could not stand to see either one cease to exist.

His recent outing as a mutant is still a bit disturbing to the young man. While he has yet to experience any real backlash, the fact that people know he is different bothers him a bit and in some ways, has made him feel a bit alone. He is also worried that this will come back to haunt him, not to mention hurt his sister, his few friends and even the people at the hotel. It doesn't take a genius to know that humans have had some trouble embracing what is different and there is a thought in the back of his mind that someone might try to exploit him and his powers. He's a bit more cautious now to say the least.

It should be noted that Jean-Paul is extremely proud of his French-Canadian heritage. Extremely proud. Really fucking proud.

Jean-Paul likes playing video games, eating food that is bad for him (especially taqueria), reading, illegally downloading music/movies, cats and other fluffy animals, dancing around his room with his sister, swimming (though he doesn't do it much now), that ice cream where they mix it in front of you, sleeping in, sleeping next to someone, sci-fi/fantasy movies (a new discovery), Quebec, moving faster than everyone else, and aquariums.

He dislikes the fact alcohol/drugs effect him differently, the lack of snow in Santa Monica, not knowing what to do, Italian food, and being alone.

While it isn't really part of his personality, it should be noted that Jean-Paul is not very open about the fact he is gay. It's not that he sees that there is anything wrong with it as he has no moral/religious grounds, but he just doesn't want to shout it from the rooftops. He fears that people will instantly judge him once they know, not to mention assume things about him based on stereotypes and the media. This is an awful thought to him and he would just rather avoid it all together. Currently, he is only out to a few select people, plus Tessa and Doug since they are nosy bitches who read entires.

[edit] History

Life for Jean-Paul Beaubier and his sister Jeanne-Marie started out average, but within a few shorts weeks it took a turn for tragedy when Mr. and Mrs. Beaubier were killed in a car accident. Lucky for Jean-Paul, some cousins of his mother’s, the Martins, agreed to adopt the young boy. They sadly did not have enough money to adopt and take care of his sister as well, though they did arrange for her to be sent to a well-respected girl’s school and they honestly had plans to adopt her later. However, the young boy apparently had tragedy written all over him because when he was six years old, the Martin’s were also killed in a car accident. Jean-Paul was then shuffled off to foster care and the truth concerning his sister was buried with his adoptive parents.

For the next seven or so years, Jean-Paul was shuffled through foster home after foster home It was actually pretty lonely and he became rather closed off toward people, but no one really seemed to notice. After all, he was always a temporary addition to the family, not to mention some extra money for them as well. The only high point of his entire stay in foster care was being introduced to swimming at the age of eight. He took to the sport almost immediately and continued to participate in it as he was shuffled around Quebec, using it as a form of escape from his daily life.

Blah, blah, blah. About four months after turning thirteen, strange things started happening to Jean-Paul and he was sure he didn’t like them. He was pretty sure he didn’t like waking up to find himself hovering a good foot above his bed because that wasn’t normal. Yes, he had been born with pointy ears, but that could easily been attributed to a birth defect. This… could not. He took to locking his door at night and needless to say, didn’t mention this new found ability to anyone. After all, he didn’t want to be labeled an even bigger freak than he already was.

It didn’t take Jean-Paul long to realize another aspect of his ability. Slowly, he began to notice that he was growing faster with everything from his reflexes to running to catch the bus. WELL WELL WELL. It wasn’t long before he was incorporating this into his swimming and it wasn’t long after that he started winning, not to mention gaining attention. By the time he was fourteen, Jean-Paul was “training” seriously as a swimmer and at the age of fifteen, he debuted at the Junior World Championships in Beijing, China, which he swept. Not bad for a foster kid from Quebec, huh? There was also attention from the ladies, which he wasn’t quite wild about, though it did lead to him awkwardly loosing his virginity to some cute Australian swimmer. At least all the guys on his team said she was cute. Jean-Paul wasn’t really interested in the ladies, OK? The following year he was finally old enough to participate in the World Championships in Melbourne and at the tender age of sixteen, he won five gold medals while breaking five world records. Naturally, Jean-Paul enjoyed all the attention being paid to him and probably even had one of those sports montages dedicated to his story during the championships.

Moving right along.

After the World Championships, everything was coming up roses and Jean-Paul was being hailed as one of the next big contenders for the Olympic Games. He loved this attention. He craved it. This attention was the best thing since sliced bread and he was determined to keep it, even if it meant he had to technically cheat to get it. Fame apparently came with a price though and almost a month after the Championships had ended, rumors started circulating that perhaps the young Canadian swimmer wasn’t all he claimed. He wasn’t as big as the other swimmers, he didn’t practice as much and he certainly didn’t have as much overall dedication. Jean-Paul was also constantly shattering world records in what little practices he had and pretty soon, it was obvious to many that the kid might have been too good to be true.

His general arrogance toward reporters probably didn’t help the situation. Nor did his pointy ears.

Not much later, rumors of steroid abuse surfaced and in early November, an official inquest by FINA (International Swimming Federation) began. While all tests came back negative, the push for evidence that he was cheating somehow remained on the forefront of the swimming community. It seemed everyone thought of him as a cheater, but they couldn’t exactly prove how he had done it. In the end, FINA claimed to have found a clerical error on his entrance papers for the World Championships and stripped him of his medals, claiming a missing signature disqualified him from the games. Disgraced and defeated, he was trying to figure out where to go from there when he was contacted by a mysterious person.
