[edit] Powers

Petra has no real control over her powers, although she has been working diligently to figure them out since she realized that her own inability to control her powers could have saved her family. Petra knows that she has at least once been the cause of a minor earthquake.

[edit] Personality

The events of Petra's last few years have given her an extreme amount of distrust when it comes to people around her. She has a problem trusting the motives of people. Her greatest source of trust right now is in herself -- she knows that, even without training, she is able to use her powers at least somehow to protect herself. She was let down too often by foster parents, not even counting Matthew's attempts to touch her. Because of her memories of her father's adultery and the talk of divorce, the inappropriate actions of her foster father, Petra does not trust men very much. She would rather take direction from another woman, as she does not fear that they would treat her like an object, and since she is a woman, she considers them the more trustworthy sex.

Hand in hand with her distrust of people is her fear of being considered a 'burden'. Petra was made to feel like she was the cause of trouble when her parents died, and her foster parents made her feel out of place and troublesome, even if she did what she could to make herself pleasant (which wasn't a lot, as she was mourning her family). Her own self-loathing tells her that she isn't worth other people taking the time to help her, and so she does not reach out to the people around her for help unless absolutely necessary. It surprises Petra when people offer help, and she struggles with taking it.

Petra is an extrovert, but over the past year she has grown quieter and secludes herself for long periods of time. She loves to be around people, but often will sit quietly and enjoy the energy that their interaction provides. She finds being silent and in the 'middle' of things allows her to feel more sociable without putting herself at risk for miserable friendships.

Even though she is now in the presence of other mutants, Petra does not trust them and is still full of fear. She has regular nightmares of men chasing after her or rocks swallowing her whole. Petra wants to learn to control the earth, as she has a fear that if she cannot control it, it will control her. She tends to be a pessimist and expect the worst out of most situations that she is in.

[edit] History

Petra was the only one of her siblings not born in Denmark. Her parents, Katrine and Jokum moved to America with young Niels before they realized that Katrine was pregnant with their second child. The family settled in New York City, and Jokum kept the family more than comfortable while working for an American firm as a Danish contact. He often traveled to Denmark, but Petra was never able to go along with him, although Niels had a chance to go.

Her childhood was comfortable and mostly happy, an example of the 'perfect' immigrant family with it's two children, two parents, and a yapping dog. Behind doors, the family had it's normal share of arguments, and Petra faintly remembers the mostly 'hushed' time when her father disclosed to her mother that he had been having an affair, when she was about six years old. Petra didn't understand what was going on nearly as well as her older brother, but she knew that something bad was happening in her family. The Kristensens decided to stay together and underwent counseling, but Petra began to have a slight fear and distrust of her father as she began to realize what exactly had happened. This slight fear has grown into something bigger at her present, as she is more aware and more judgmental about men.

Petra was just finishing her first year in high school when the family went out for a camping trip. While their family wasn't perfect, Petra was still happy with the trip for the most part -- even if she pretended that she disliked going out for a 'family vacation' as was usual for teenage girls.

While taking a hike together, a landslide rained down on the family. Petra had no idea how she survived, but park rangers arrived to see her weeping against a rock and pushing it off of her mother -- the rangers told themselves that her ability to move something that huge had to do with adrenaline, that was all.

Even if Petra was able to push a rock far too large to be possible, it no longer mattered to her. She was unable to save her mother, or anyone in her family. Her family in Denmark were all gone and Petra was an American citizen, anyway, and needed to stay in America. She was put into foster care and began her sophomore year in the second home of her foster care stay. She was quickly shunted away to the third home, and hated the confines of the house. Not only was her foster mother (Julie) a lazy person who hardly did anything for the five other children that shared the house, she was unkind and hard. Her foster father (Matthew) was initially a welcome contrast to Julie. He listened to her whenever she actually spoke, and she began to think that he really cared about her mourning. He even began taking her out to have dinner or see a movie, and on walks. Petra was starving for someone to treat her like a normal human being, and she felt ignored and unable to connect with those in her new high-school.

Matthew destroyed her trust on one of their walks. They had made their way to Central Park and it was getting dark. Petra started to be worried about the other children -- she knew that it was likely that Julie wouldn't have made anything for them to eat. When she suggested that they head back to the house, Matthew led the way -- right into a group of bushes. He began to touch her inappropriately and ripped her shirt off. Petra fought him, but he was stronger, and since he had covered her mouth she tried to scream -- and he removed his hand. Somehow, Matthew had sank knee deep into the ground and was unable to move. His goal was forgotten and he began to try to get himself free while panicking, and while Petra ran away as fast as she could.

She realized that she had the power to manipulate the earth through the power of her mind. Petra tested her talents out on a few other people who hid out in Central Park like she did, and she made caves out of stone to hide in whenever possible. After a week in Central Park she started to be afraid that she would be caught and sent to another juvenile delinquent center. She began to hitch-hike across America-- only accepting rides from women. Petra didn't have money, but some of the kind mothers who picked her up would stick a wrinkled twenty dollar bill in her hand. She used that money for food, but otherwise made her own shelters in rocks. Petra didn't steal, but did do her fair share of panhandling.

Traveling across America was slow going, but Petra didn't care. She occasionally made her way to National Parks and would hide out there for several days if she had enough nourishment. She loved the seclusion and would sometimes cry and wonder about her family -- if she could have saved them, and if they would forgive her if they knew that she had somehow saved herself and had not saved them. She still grapples with this question, and is bitter towards herself and refuses to feel self-pity for her lack of a family.

In early July she found herself in California, finally. She started to hear rumors that there were other people who had 'problems' like she did, and eventually found herself at the Paradise Hotel. For the first time in five months she had a bed to sleep in and she had people to talk with who were 'different'. She has hated going back to school (she is currently taking classes for both a sophomore and a junior and will only be able to graduate in what ought to be her senior year if she works hard enough), and finding a job to pay for whatever she might need. She still isn't sure how much she trusts the people running Paradise Hotel, but she figures that if necessary she can protect herself with her talents.

NOTE: After in-game events and her high school graduation, Petra has departed to travel around America.
