Two years ago, Jean Grey and Warren Worthington the third graduated from high school. It was also the year Warren Worthington Junior discovered his son had wings, and it was two years after the death of Jean's older sister, Sara. The two of them left town, deciding California was the place to be. For Warren, it was the furthest he could get away from his father without leaving the country. For Jean, it was where she was supposed to attend college. But in the end, it was a chance at a new life for both of them.
The cross-country trip took them weeks, interrupted by Warren's arrest for DUI. He didn't hang around for the trial, instead relying on Jean's talent to walk him straight out of the prison. Only he didn't leave alone - they were joined by Scott Summers, another runaway, who desperately needed a new start of his own. Blinded by his emerging optic blasts, he'd been locked up after a little too much urban destruction.
It would be the three of them that discovered Paradise Hotel. Built in the early 1930s, it was intended to be a luxury hotel for visiting stars to relax in away from the buzz of Hollywood. It never quite caught on, and the hotel passed hands several times before shut down completely during the 80s. It remained empty and derelict until Jean, Warren and Scott arrived in Santa Monica and broke in to have somewhere to sleep.
They haven't left since. Their numbers slowly grew, as they met other freaks like them who needed somewhere to stay. It started to become a home, rather than somewhere to crash, as they slowly began the trek towards making it habitable. New arrivals were greeted by their receptionist, Marie-Ange Colbert, a young lady with a particular affinity with tarot cards, and given fake ids and paper trail by Tessa, a mysterious girl with a knack for using computers and a memory better than an elephants. People came and went as they pleased, the only rule being 'don't talk about Paradise'.
Their presence didn't go completely unnoticed. First, there was Reverend Stryker, a crazy minister who'd killed his son when he discovered he was a mutant, and was determined to rid the world of all of these 'freaks'. Underestimating their powers, he and a few other street crazies attacked the hotel, only to be driven away by the residents of the hotel, who nursed their injuries for weeks afterwards. Warren and Tessa would earn for themselves an implacable opponent when they interrupted the business plans of one Elias Bogan, swindling a nightclub away from one of his business associates. The hotel was nearly sold to developers from underneath their noses.
After Tabby Smith was nearly beaten to death by her stepfather for being a mutant, the Paradise residents decided it was time to be a little more proactive. They started to seek out mutants, following stories of freak accidents and sending out a team to rescue kids who couldn't stay where they were, but couldn't just up and leave themselves. Not everyone wanted to be rescued, but quite a few came along, the rest being told the doors were open anytime. Some of them would show up, some of them wouldn't.
Recently, the hotel was attacked again by Reverend Stryker. Better prepared this time, he attacked with a group of believers primarily culled from ex-military, ex-police. They brought guns and grenades to the party, and the hotel residents were lucky to survive. As it is, the hotel suffered serious damage, with more than a few of them nursing serious injuries. Marie-Ange Colbert currently lies in an induced coma, burned beyond recognition. The doctors are surprised she's still alive, and at Warren's insistence, have begun the series of skin grafts necessary to bring her back to her old self.
Paradise Hotel may have lost their heart, the sweet girl who would greet you by name and with a smile, but Warren and his right hand girl Tessa are determined to keep the hotel going. They’d repaired and rebuilt once, they could do it again. This was not the end for them.
